Vice Media was founded in 1994. Twenty-eight years later, operating in more than 20 countries, the media powerhouse had added dozens of systems to its arsenal. Vice had paid for multiple tools that served the same purpose and workers weren't aware of what tools were available to them. Keeping track of Vice's data was impossible because nobody knew all of the places the data existed.
In early 2022, I had seen enough and pitched my idea to leadership to build a system catalog. By November, my team cataloged 189 systems, including key details regarding implementation, financial budgeting, support, usage and data. It's used mainly to:
- Serve as a central repository of all system information
- Identify opportunities to integrate systems
- Identify opportunities to remove duplicitous systems
- Identify opportunities to roll out systems globally that were only local or regional
- Track system implementation, enhancement and sunsetting progress
